G-Shock x Against Lab DW-5600
There’s something fun for everyone at every price point. Personally, the journey of finding a fun watch (taking price into consideration of course) has been ongoing for a while now. Yes, I said no more watches for 2024, but well, we’re enthusiasts after all, right?
Ever since its release earlier this year, the “Universal Language” collaboration between G-Shock and Against Lab has been on my radar. Never thought I’d say this, but ever since this came in, the G-Shock bug has officially bit me. I guess a lot of it has to do with the variety that G-Shocks offer across similar and different models. In a way, it’s like collecting Tomica diecast cars, they’re affordable and you’re tempted to get one each time something cool pops up.
At least for me, the fun in G-Shocks isn’t conveyed through specifications, but rather, through simple things like color choice, design concept and even the backlight and case that the watch comes in.
First off, this particular G-Shock ref. DW-5600AL24-7 catches my eye with its choice of color. When put next to a regular white t-shirt for example, the creamy tone on this piece really stands out. Think of it as, creamy faux patina on the entire watch. So retro, so good. Paired with the polka dots inspired by coding labels and a strap keeper inspired by cassette side indicators, I find that the aesthetics of this watch come together really well. On the dial, the pink Against branding adds flavor to the entire watch.
Setting it apart from other DW-5600s, the backlight on this features the Against branding. I must say, it’s been awhile since I geeked out about backlights and I’m happy to report that this one’s pretty cool.
All in all, there’s synergy in this collaboration. Like how music unites people across all backgrounds, the same can be said about a G-Shock, in my opinion. Admittedly, I’m writing this while being bitten by the G-Shock bug, but if you’re looking to get something fun or funky, look into G-Shocks. You might just find a couple that tickle your fancy.
