Same but different – LLD & OP36
Aesthetics
While they’re both black dialed, versatile 36mm steel watches, their similarities largely end there. In my opinion, one comes in a classier package, while the other, a more toned down daily wearer. Contrary to what many might think, the latter was referring to the Oyster Perpetual 36 (OP36). Yup, the Legend Diver (LLD) 36mm does look classier in my opinion. On the LLD, the tapering of its lugs paired with its mesh bracelet that shimmers under the right light exudes a classy, old money aesthetic that the OP36 honestly lacks. Case wise, the LLD also boasts a more distinctive character thanks to its super compressor case that’s such a looker.

Despite the arguable lack in character, the OP36 shines in terms of visual balance and light interaction. Being a no-nonsense, time-only watch, the way the dial, indices and hands interact with light truly elevates it from being boring.

Wearing Experience
Although the OP36 has the sweeter 43mm lug-to-lug (L2L) length, I find that the longer L2L length on the LLD brings more character to the table and that makes it really charming.
Thickness wise, they’re both relatively similar on the spec sheet. At 11.5mm on the OP and 11.9mm on the LLD, the main differentiator here would be the side profile of both timepieces when viewed at a certain angle. Does the slight difference in thickness affect the wearing experience in terms of comfort? To be frank, not at all. However, the case architecture definitely influences the overall experience. In my opinion, the oyster case fits my 16cm wrist better. But again, how a watch wears is heavily influenced by one’s wrist size and shape.

Uniqueness & Message
In my eyes, both models possess an aura that’s elegant and understated. Although being regular production models, both the LLD and OP36 are in a way underappreciated, hence in my opinion, placing them in a special segment in the market. Think about it, at their respective price points (with a bit of extra cash), many would tend to go for something else. In the case of the LLD, it would be the Tudor Black Bay 36 or 54. While for the OP36, the more popular option would be the Explorer 36.

Verdict
Overall, writing this article made me realize that they check different boxes. Does it make sense to have both in the collection? As of now, it’s an easy yes for me because they both put a smile on my face for different reasons. One gives off vintage vibes while the other, an elevated GADA timepiece. One has the cooler case while the other interacts with light better. It’s safe to say that they both compensate for their shortcomings in their own way.
