It was approximately 12 years ago when I was gifted a G-Shock reference G-9010. At least to the young kid that I was, a G-Shock was THE cool watch to get while growing up. In fact, it was a luxury, considering that it costs way more than a F-91W which essentially serves the same purpose as a school watch. I mean, let’s be honest, I just needed something that could tell time. Today, 12 years have passed, a lot has changed, and a second G-Shock has finally entered my collection. This reference G-5600UE.
Interestingly, the same excitement still hit me when I received this piece about a week ago. Revisiting a watch line that was part of so many major milestones in my schooling years really reminds me of how sometimes, new acquisitions don’t necessarily have to be the most expensive to bring joy. As predicted, it has been on my wrist for the past seven days.
So, let’s be less technical here and talk looks. While being basic, functional, and durable, it does all of that while looking very timeless. Or let’s be honest, iconic. With the color scheme being similar to the G-Shock reference DW-5600C from 1987, it has subtle touches that add a ton of character to the watch. But believe it or not, something like this would’ve never caught my eye 12 years ago. Today, it’s everything that a G-Shock should be in my opinion.
Legibility wise, the digital display is well balanced by being very legible while not having numbers that are too large. With great proportions, everything on the digital display can be seen at a glance, just how it should be. Although the touch of color from the yellow and red “Alarm Chrono” “Shock Resist” wordings do absolutely nothing to improve visibility, I find that it really adds vintage flavor. And of course, that’s great!
Having a small wrist, I was concerned about how it would wear. But after trying it on, well, I was sold. On my 16cm wrist, I’m happy to report that this little guy wears great as you can see! The case fits in between the width of my wrist, making it look very well-sized as there’s no overhang from the case alone.
To conclude, if you don’t already have one, why not? To make things simple, just like all icons, this G-Shock has a vibe and character that is irreplaceable.
