Picture this, it’s been a long week and it’s finally the weekend! Before heading to your favorite breakfast spot, you pick out a watch that you’re feeling for the day, get into your car that brings you so much joy, and just drive. On your way there, traffic is low and the weather is great. Vibing to your favorite Spotify playlist while taking it easy on the throttle, you wind the windows down to catch the morning breeze and of course, to hear your exhaust note when you heel-and-toe (even when you don’t have to). Just thinking about it makes me itching for a drive right now…

It’s cool to think about how cars and watches are different but at the same time, very similar. Because if we think about it, they’re essentially tools that serve a purpose in our daily lives. Fortunately, they do much more than that if you’re an enthusiast. More importantly, both hobbies bring us a form of joy that just like all hobbies, must be felt to understand. I mean, have you ever had someone stare at you as if you’re a weirdo when you’re smiling while taking a photo of your car? I have. But hey, what you’re driving or wearing on your wrist really doesn’t matter because if they know, they know.
Sometimes, it’s interesting to dissect the question of why these two hobbies are often closely related to one another. For instance, it’s very common to have conversations at watch-related meetups that switch seamlessly from watches to cars without us realizing. Come to think about it, I guess it’s how these things make us feel. We smile when we drive, we smile when we check see pretty watches and we also smile when we’re wearing what we love while driving what we love. Besides that, these can also be seen as outlets for us to express who we are. The idea of how 2 identical watch or car models can look different with a personal touch remains as a solid example. Whether it’s choosing your unique strap combo or swapping out a pair of factory seats for some Recaros, these hobbies allow us be a kid in the candy store again.
As always, the presence of modern technology and innovation definitely pushes the boundaries of both cars and watches. From higher accuracy timepieces to autonomous driving vehicles, the possibilities seem to be endless as we move forward. But while innovation is great, it might not be for every enthusiast. When we look at how quartz technology and electric motors have changed their respective industries, there seems to be commonality in how the fanbase of both hobbies are sort of divided into a few groups. I guess that’s just how things are right?
