While preparing for a special occasion awhile ago, I found myself asking, so, what’s supposed to go on the wrist this time? Ever since then, it got me thinking, what actually gravitates us towards choosing a watch to wear for significant occasions? Well, I guess the answer to that question heavily depends on what watches mean to you. Although a simple approach would be to wear something that matches our outfit of the day, I’m pretty convinced that somewhere around the world, lies an enthusiast who puts way too much thought into choosing their watch for a special occasion. And if you’re that someone, this little write-up is for you.
Upon deeper thinking, as cliché as it sounds, it might be less about the price tag. It is, however, about some subjective factors that vary across each enthusiast. Personally, the few factors that seem to pull me towards picking my timepiece for special occasions can very much be related to how some would choose to spray a dedicated scent on special occasions. That is, the sentimental value that comes with the piece and also the memories that would be built with these little things. Yes, sometimes watches come and go but at the end of the day, the memories stay. Putting more thought into it, it is actually a loop on its own! The more you wear your watch, the more memories that you can potentially build with it and the more sentimentally attached you get. Here’s the best part, the cycle repeats! Ain’t that the beauty of the hobby?
Going back to me referencing the scent of choice, similarly, choosing a watch for an occasion can also be related to how it makes you feel. No, maybe not how the watch would elevated you in terms of status (at least that’s what I think), but more of the kind of person that your watch makes you feel like when you’re with it. For instance, I love how wearing a vintage Grand Seiko 45GS makes me feel like a little Seiko fanboy while at the same time being very incognito about it. That feeling where I go, “yeah if you know you know”. Although I agree to a certain extent that a watch still has to somehow blend-in with what I am wearing, I started to think the other way around ever since the pandemic hit. I mean, we wore dress watches while wearing workout shorts all day right? Or maybe it’s just me….
Well, maybe this is one of the reasons why watch collecting is a never-ending loop? A beautiful loop that is. Here’s something to think about the next time you choose a watch for a special occasion, why did you choose it? And why sometimes, time after time, do you go back to it?
